365 images for 365 days: Day 83

As you know, and if you don´t I'll tell you, yesterday it was my birthday, and despite of I didn´t make a big party and I wasn´t with all the people I had liked celebrate it, I made all my best to spend a good day and surround myself with nice people.

Y comimos tarta!!! Por cortesía de León y Mónica.
I went out to have a few beers with the ones who could join me, and we had some notable moments trying to explain the Spanish Christmas traditions to my two Taiwanese friends, Cathy and Teresa (seriously, it's really hard to explain about the nativity figures if you don't know the right words in English). The important thing is that we laugh a lot and practise English, jeje. And we ate cake!! Courtesy of León and Mónica.

On the other hand, during the day, Daniel and Patricia (my bosses) and the triplets, sang me the "happy birthday song" and gave me a few things. But today, after dinner, they had prepared an enormous panettone to blow the candles, and all of them agreed not to let me go into the kitchen and discover it :D

365 images for 365 days: Day 80

If anything characterizes London, and many other big cities in across the world, is the fact that on every corner there are any artists sharing their skills. You find them in the ups and downs of the bridges, on the bank of the river, in the pedestrian streets, but especially in the subway tunnels. And they all pretty good. If I had a real nerve I would spend hours listening to the big hits of brit-pop or the best guitar solos...

365 images for 365 days: Day 79

Yesterday I received a letter from my family. Yes!! A hand-writing letter, with its envelope, with postage and all!! You can´t imagine the illusion it made me. Not just because the letter, but because no one sends letters by traditional way!!!
The fashion of the 80s returns, retro bicycles, vintage clothing, vinyl records... And nobody remembers the mail??? I want more letters, please. I want my family and friends tell me their lifes in black and white. I want that someone confess me his love in a letter written with a trembling hand (sounds corny, but you do not deny me that you haven't ever wanted ¬¬ ).
If this come back again, we wouldn´t have so apprehension to receive mail with all these bills and notices from the bank, but the illusion of discover if someone has remembered us.

365 images for 365 days: Day 76

The bad feelings of the weekend finally are over (thanks to my mum and my grandma, mainly), and I already can say that december turns to have all its splendor. And despite of today should have been a key day in my life, has passed unnoticed. Test passed!!
I've noticed there is a lot of little details that can make happy your day. For example, this morning, as I walked around the neighborhood, I stumbled upon one of these community orchards shared by residents, where everyone has a piece of land to grow what they want, and the mind is gone from me, direct to my father and the orchard that he has planted in my house. I haven't enjoyed it too much, because I´m here, but it has already had seasons of strawberries, corn, beans, tomatoes, peas, beans and so on. I think he always had that illusion and the face of happiness that he has when goes in the kitchen with his carrycot full of vegetables is unmistaken. Proud of what he has planted and cultivated.
Like this should be all. And I stop being philosophical.

365 images for 365 days: Day 74

He salido, me he ido de compras y he comido fuera.
This weekend has been one of the worst I've spent since I'm here. I went out, to shopping and eaten out. Just to clear my mind, but even so no I get over homesickness. I'm in a pre-depressant state which I hope it'll be over soon, because I can't stand myself.
Said that, I focus in what's important. December starts, my favourite month. And this year, it has to be awesome. The universe owes me. Last year it started very well, full of hopes and expectations, but on the third day everything went to the hell and I choked with the 12 grapes (it´s typical in Spain eating 12 grapes in New Year Eve). I remember very little of december 2011, and in a way I appreciate it.
So, as the month has begun fatal, with a lot of discouragement and gloom, has to get better. I know this month will be great, and I´m going to enjoy until to drop dead tired (please, so be it).
No more bad feelings. In this photo I wear my new hat, now it has become necessary to go outside :D

Y ME ENCANTA!!!
Otra visita obligada...

365 images for 365 days: Day 62

As I told you yesterday, I´m telling you about the Rain Room.
It´s an artistic installation in Barbican Centre, in the City. It's nothing more and nothing less than a room with artificial rain, but with the incentive of that when you go through the room, the rain stops. There are a number of motion sensors which cut the water in the area where you're placed.
You can think: "Going to see how it´s rain in London? Seriously?". Well, when I say that we had to wait three hours making queue to get in, you shall surely bring the hands to the head. I don´t know what is what made us go (us and other visitors who had to wait the same), but it had a point to enjoy the rain without getting wet. It was magical, really.

365 images for 365 days: Day 61

This weekend couldn´t have gone better. On friday, bowling and beers with my classmates and my friend Andrea who came from Switzerland for a few days; on saturday, an artistic visit Barbican Centre to see the Rain Room (I'll talk you about it in tomorrow's post), and more beers and dinner with old and new friends; and on sunday, today, something I'd never done before: ice skating!!!!
Well, it was very exciting, not just for the novelty, but because the environment deserved. The place is called Somerset House, and it's a palatial house with a courtyard. For in that courtyard assembled the rink every Christmas, and it´s like the films. Plus, it was a very good weather. It was a little cold, but there wasn´t a single cloud and the sun shone like long time ago.

About me, I was dying of nerves thinking I was going to make a fool tumbled on the floor all the time, and clutching the railing like there's no tomorrow. But no. I fell down only once, while I tried Jamie, one of the triplets, don´t. In the end, both went to the ground like frozen croquettes.
I made the first round clutching the railing, of course, getting used to the skates. Later, I was sliding from one corner to another, without hands. Until finally I was able to hold the edge and start doing full rounds without grab. I wasn't going very fast, because I´m not a masochistic, but I got carried away a bit.
It has been very well. I liked a lot.

365 images for 365 days: Day 60

The most I like it and the most I enjoy with to know a town is walking aimlessly. Let the monuments and landmarks sorprise without go to look for. So, it´s nice when you bump into something that you didn´t expect, and then catches your eye.
It's happened several times, and I've encountered with a masked Beatles graffiti, by Mr Brainwash in Holborn; a sparkling Union Jack phone box covered with Swarovski crystals, created by Peter Blake, among others things.
This is how we find the image of today: a giant plug in Carnaby Street, one of the most famous of London, which is decorated according to the occasion. This time it was wearing the flag of the UK by the Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

365 images for 365 days: Day 59

Today I spent the afternoon playing bowling with a few students and a professor from School of English I attended at. It was fun, but the best part came later, in the pub, with beers and chat. There is nothing better to practice English that a couple of beers, if you know what I mean :D

365 images for 365 days: Day 58

For those who have been in London or anywhere in The United Kingdom, you'll have noticed one thing. If not, I'll tell you, that´s what I´m here for.
All the bench, and when I say everyone, I mean everyone of them, are dedicated to someone who passed away. There are in the parks, gardens, in schools, streets, anywhere, with their inscription telling to who and who comes from. Sometimes with the date of death, and other just with the date of the while of this person spent in this place.
Do you remember the film Notting Hill when Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant break into a private garden and she reads the inscription on a bench? Well, that's exactly what you find here.
There will be someone who might seem tacky, but I think is a very romantic idea, and I'd like to one day, make me a reminder so.
